Typical hazards & measures
Cold water and hypothermia
— Use thermal layers/wetsuits or drysuits appropriate to water temperature. Brief cold-shock response, minimise time in water, and prepare rapid rewarming (blankets, dry kit, warm sweet drinks, shelter). Monitor for shivering, slurred speech, and poor coordination.
Fire onboard
— Fit and service extinguishers/alarms; brief fuel shut-offs and galley safety (no loose clothing, pot restraints, ventilation). Stow fuels upright in ventilated spaces; prohibit open flames on deck clutter. Run fire/abandon-ship drills regularly.
Overboard retrieval and cold shock
— Carry lifebuoy with light/throw line; brief immediate “stop/mark/call” actions and recovery tackles. Practise short-handed recovery methods and hypothermia rewarming sequence. Log drills and debrief to improve timings.
Boom strikes during gybes
— Train controlled gybes and verbal calls; mark no-go arc on deck. Rig/brief preventer use in breeze and ease vang before gybe. Require helmets for training in heavy air if risk justifies.
Falling overboard during maneuvers
— Teach three-point contact and handholds; require non-slip footwear and clipped-on tethers in rough weather/night. Mark boom arc zones; assign a spotter during gybes. Rehearse immediate response (throw, point, shout, manoeuvre).
