Typical hazards & measures
Losing steering or rudder failure
— Inspect tiller, cables, quadrant and fittings pre-sail; carry emergency tiller or jury-rig materials. Train sail-trim steering and heave-to. Keep tools readily accessible and brief safe work on deck while troubleshooting.
Boom strikes during gybes
— Train controlled gybes and verbal calls; mark no-go arc on deck. Rig/brief preventer use in breeze and ease vang before gybe. Require helmets for training in heavy air if risk justifies.
Anchor dragging or poor anchorage
— Assess seabed type, fetch and forecast; calculate scope (at least 5:1 normal, more in wind). Snub with chain stopper; set anchor with reverse power and check transits/GPS anchor alarm. Prepare a second anchor and brief night checks.
Medical emergencies offshore
— Carry a suitable first-aid kit and trained first-aider; brief medical disclosure and meds stowage. Keep comms ready (VHF/DSC, mobile if coverage) and an evacuation/return-to-port plan. Log incidents and review controls post-event.
Sunburn, glare, and dehydration
— Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen before departure and reapply on schedule; use hats, neck protection and UV eyewear. Enforce regular water breaks and carry sufficient potable water. Use glare briefings and lookout rotation in high sun.
