Typical hazards & measures
Urban traffic and cyclists
— Pre-approve road crossings, forbid multi-lane roads, marshal key junctions and mandate bright tops. Stagger starts to reduce bunching and teach a stop-look-decide routine.
Fences, walls and barbed wire
— Mark forbidden crossings, encourage stile and gate use and avoid fragile walls. Brief on safe climbing technique, tape barbed wire at control sites and place flags to avoid unsafe shortcuts.
Safeguarding and remote supervision
— Ensure all staff and volunteers complete background checks and safeguarding training. Maintain two-adult supervision, use buddy systems and designated meeting points, and display complaint procedures with clear reporting lines.
Wildlife, livestock and dogs
— Brief on calm movement near animals, avoid splitting herds, notify landowners of events. Mark dog areas and relocate controls if hazards are reported. Carry antihistamines.
Night navigation and low visibility
— Require head torches, backup lights and reflective gear. Tighten course boundaries, add catching features, and position marshals at crossings. Use whistles for safety.
