Typical hazards & measures

• Invasive plants and allergens — Survey for knotweed, hogweed and other invasives; apply biosecurity (clean-down, tool quarantine, controlled waste). Plan clearance in low-pollen windows, issue long sleeves and barrier creams, and provide washing points. Use licensed treatment and documented disposal routes.
• Chainsaw/brushcutter operation — Only trained, certificated users; pre-use checks on chain, guards and throttle. Wear full PPE (helmet with visor, cut-resistant trousers, gloves, boots). Maintain two-handed grip, safe stance and cutting zones; refuel cold; stop on public approach; use harnesses and guards for brushcutters.
• Dust and airborne particles — Damp down with bowsers or misters; minimise dry handling and drop heights; use on-tool extraction where practicable. Position crews upwind, suspend dusty tasks in high winds, provide P3 RPE and eye protection, and cover or sheet stockpiles. Sweep wet, not dry, to prevent re-aerosolising.
• Manual handling of arisings — Plan lift routes and drop points to minimise carries; use sleds, trolleys or grabs for heavy/awkward loads. Team-lift within capability, keep loads close, avoid twisting, rotate tasks, and use micro-breaks. Set maximum single-lift weights and brief warm-up guidance at the start of shift.
• Working near water and habitats — Use only aquatic-approved products; apply legal buffer zones/LERAP distances; fit anti-drift kits; never fill near water; keep absorbent booms/pads ready; brief team on protected species; halt if wildlife is active at the margin and re-time the treatment appropriately.
