Typical hazards & measures

• Safeguarding — Implement a robust safeguarding policy, including staff training and background checks for volunteers working with children or vulnerable attendees. Establish a clear reporting procedure for safeguarding concerns. Provide a dedicated, visible safeguarding team onsite.
• Access to drinking water — Install free water refill stations throughout the site, ensuring accessibility from all areas. Conduct regular inspections to maintain hygiene and prevent contamination. Provide clear signage to direct attendees to water points and encourage regular hydration during the event.
• Electrical hazards — Hire certified electricians to set up and inspect all electrical installations. Ensure all equipment is PAT tested and cables are appropriately covered or elevated to prevent contact with water or foot traffic. Provide residual current devices (RCDs) to quickly cut off power in case of faults.
• Environmental impact — Implement a comprehensive waste management plan that includes recycling and composting facilities. Use biodegradable materials where possible and encourage vendors to do the same. Promote public transportation and provide bike racks to reduce carbon emissions. Conduct a post-event environmental impact assessment to inform future improvements.
• Fairground rides — Require all operators to provide safety certifications and conduct inspections prior to the event. Ensure rides are operated by trained professionals and include visible safety instructions for attendees. Position rides with adequate space between them to prevent overcrowding.
