Typical hazards & measures
Falls
— Set up belay systems that minimize slack in the rope to reduce the distance of any fall. Ensure all climbing participants are properly clipped in before ascending and monitor rope tension during climbs to prevent harsh falls or collisions with the rock face.
Tripping hazards on uneven ground
— Identify and clear any obstacles in the area where participants will be moving or preparing to climb. Warn participants of uneven surfaces, tree roots, or loose rocks that could cause tripping, and designate clear walking paths. Ensure participants are sat down when waiting at the top of a climb.
Dehydration
— Enforce regular water breaks and provide access to fresh water throughout the activity. Encourage participants to bring personal water bottles and monitor for signs of dehydration, such as dry skin or dizziness.
Inadequate supervision
— Ensure experienced guides or instructors holding the required qualifications supervise all climbs, especially for beginners or high-risk routes.
Equipment misplacement
— Implement a strict equipment tracking system, where each item is logged out and back in. Ensure that harnesses, helmets, and other personal protective gear are checked and packed away by instructors at the end of each session to prevent misplacement.
