Typical hazards & measures

• High-speed falls — Teach safe falling techniques and provide protective gear where necessary. Conduct drills on falling and remounting safely, emphasizing proper body positioning to avoid injury. Gradually introduce higher speeds as participants build confidence.
• Lacerations from fins — Inspect fins regularly for sharp edges or damage. Train participants on how to carry and handle boards safely. Use fin covers during transport and storage. Teach how to avoid fins during falls and water entries.
• Prolonged exposure to saltwater — Provide freshwater rinse stations and showers. Educate participants on skin and hair care after saltwater exposure. Ensure equipment is rinsed and properly cleaned to avoid saltwater damage, extending its life and reducing maintenance costs.
• Entrapment in shallow water — Avoid shallow areas with obstacles, marking dangerous zones clearly. Provide training on how to navigate shallow water and what to do if entrapped. Instructors should monitor participants closely when working near these areas.
• Incorrectly sized equipment — Fit each participant with the appropriate board, sail, and wetsuit based on their weight and skill level. Regularly check gear fit throughout sessions and make adjustments if needed to ensure safety, comfort, and control during activities.
