Typical hazards & measures

• Lack of familiarity with equipment — Provide thorough, step-by-step instruction on all equipment before entering the water. Allow practice time onshore to ensure participants are comfortable. Gradually introduce advanced equipment as skills progress, matching gear to ability levels.
• Safeguarding — Implement clear safeguarding policies, ensuring all staff are trained in child protection and background-checked. Set protocols for managing participants' safety and privacy, with designated staff responsible for reporting any safeguarding concerns.
• Incorrectly sized equipment — Fit each participant with the appropriate board, sail, and wetsuit based on their weight and skill level. Regularly check gear fit throughout sessions and make adjustments if needed to ensure safety, comfort, and control during activities.
• Allergic reactions — Collect medical information from participants and ensure first aid kits have allergy treatments like epinephrine pens. Train staff to handle allergic reactions. Provide a designated person to oversee medical needs, with emergency protocols in place.
• Prolonged exposure to saltwater — Provide freshwater rinse stations and showers. Educate participants on skin and hair care after saltwater exposure. Ensure equipment is rinsed and properly cleaned to avoid saltwater damage, extending its life and reducing maintenance costs.
