Typical hazards & measures
Getting lost
— Instructors should always be equipped with navigation tools and route maps. Ensure groups are briefed on the route and stick together, with a guide at the front and rear of the group.
Loss of footwear or gear in water
— Ensure all footwear and gear are securely fastened before entering the water. Periodically check gear throughout the activity. Have spare equipment on hand for replacement if needed.
Drowning
— Equip all participants with well-fitted buoyancy aids and ensure close supervision, particularly of weaker swimmers. Regularly check water conditions and avoid high-swell areas.
Sea-sickness or dizziness
— Brief participants on the potential for seasickness, especially if the water is rough. Provide advice on staying focused and hydrated. Have first aid ready for those experiencing nausea.
Jellyfish stings
— Brief participants on the local marine life, especially jellyfish. Advise them to avoid touching unfamiliar creatures and provide first aid treatments like vinegar in case of stings.
