Typical hazards & measures

• Hypoglycemia or hunger — Encourage participants to bring snacks and ensure a scheduled break for food and hydration. Have a supply of high-energy snacks available for participants who may feel fatigued or hungry. Provide guidance on appropriate snack choices before the event.
• Dead animals — If a dead animal is discovered, instruct participants not to touch it. Designate a supervisor to mark the area and contact local animal control for safe removal. Ensure participants wash hands thoroughly after the cleanup. Provide gloves and training on what to do if encountering such situations.
• Dehydration — Ensure access to water at all times and encourage regular hydration breaks. Limit time spent in direct sun, especially during peak heat hours.
• Safeguarding concerns — Ensure all volunteers are background-checked and trained in safeguarding procedures. Always maintain appropriate ratios of adults to children and ensure that activities are always in public, supervised spaces. Keep emergency contacts for all participants.
• Road crossings — Identify safe crossing points in advance, and only cross in groups with a designated adult supervising. Provide high-visibility clothing to all participants and arrange for additional adult volunteers to act as crossing guards where necessary.
