Typical hazards & measures
Jumping and landing
— Provide coaching on proper jumping and landing techniques to distribute impact safely. Incorporate plyometric exercises to improve strength and coordination. Monitor players for signs of fatigue that could affect technique. Encourage the use of supportive footwear.
Poor weather conditions (extreme heat, lightning, etc.)
— Monitor weather forecasts and adjust match schedules accordingly. Implement policies to suspend play during extreme weather conditions such as thunderstorms or extreme heat. Provide indoor facilities or shelters if possible. Educate players on the risks associated with different weather conditions.
Failing to remove hazards like benches near the court
— Keep the area around the court clear of unnecessary equipment and obstacles. Remove or reposition benches, chairs, or other items that could pose a hazard. Conduct a safety check before matches to ensure the playing area and surroundings are safe. Use barriers to separate the court from seating areas if necessary.
Dehydration
— Ensure easy access to drinking water or sports drinks. Schedule regular hydration breaks, especially in hot weather. Educate players on the importance of staying hydrated before, during, and after play. Monitor for signs of dehydration like excessive thirst or fatigue.
Stray balls from adjacent courts
— Install protective netting or barriers between courts to prevent stray balls. Educate players to call out when a ball enters another court. Encourage players to be aware of their surroundings. Supervise courts to manage play and prevent interference.
