Typical hazards & measures

• Blocked or leaking gutters — Clear gutters seasonally using extendable tools, ensure downpipes discharge safely, and check water flow during heavy rain. Use safety harnesses if roof access is unavoidable.
• Use of power tools — Provide ear protection for workers, limit noisy tasks to daytime hours, maintain equipment regularly, and train volunteers in safe tool use. Keep tools stored securely when not in use.
• Use of power supply for tools and equipment — Plug tools only into RCD-protected sockets, check cables for wear before each use, and avoid daisy-chaining extensions. Keep leads away from water and walkways, and switch off at the source when work stops. Train volunteers to report faults immediately.
• Falls from ladders and scaffolding — Only trained adults may use ladders or scaffolding, which must be inspected before use. Always have a second person present, maintain three points of contact, and avoid working in high winds or poor lighting.
• Vehicle access for maintenance deliveries and contractors — Designate loading zones away from pedestrian entrances, restrict vehicle times to quiet periods, and use banksmen for reversing. Keep gates locked outside work hours and maintain clear signage for drivers. Inspect surfaces to prevent damage from heavy loads.
