Typical hazards & measures

• Waste disposal and fly-tipping — Provide clearly marked bins, recycle where possible, and schedule waste removal. Train volunteers in safe handling of hazardous or sharp items. Report fly-tipping to authorities and photograph for records before removal.
• Water features and ponds — Erect barriers where risk of falling exists, supervise children at all times, and post warning signs. Regularly remove algae and debris to prevent slipping and contamination. Clean water features as part of scheduled maintenance.
• Uneven paths and grassed areas — Inspect paths weekly for cracks, potholes, or trip hazards, and arrange timely repairs. Apply grit or sand in icy weather, improve drainage to prevent pooling, and install adequate lighting. Post warning signs until permanent fixes are in place.
• Noise from equipment — Provide ear defenders for prolonged machinery use and train operators to take breaks to reduce exposure. Restrict noisy work to daytime, notify neighbours in advance of larger tasks, and keep equipment well maintained to minimise volume.
• Use of pesticides and weed killers — Use only licensed products, keeping them in labelled, locked storage. Apply in calm, dry weather using gloves and masks. Cordon treated areas until safe for public entry. Maintain COSHH records and ensure volunteers are trained in safe use.
