Typical hazards & measures

• Manual handling of soil, memorials, or waste — Provide manual handling training, encourage use of barrows, trolleys, and mechanical aids, and require team lifting for heavy stones or waste sacks. Rotate tasks to reduce fatigue and remind volunteers to work within physical limits and take breaks.
• Chemical storage in sheds or outbuildings — Store all fuels, oils, and pesticides in locked, ventilated cabinets. Keep COSHH data sheets on-site, label clearly, and inspect monthly for leaks. Provide spill kits and train volunteers in safe cleanup.
• Powered mowing and strimming equipment — Carry out pre-use checks, ensure moving parts are guarded, and issue operators with goggles, gloves, and ear defenders. Restrict public access with cones or signage, and stop work if children or visitors enter the area. Store fuel securely after use.
• Rodents, insects, and stings — Inspect sheds and bins regularly, clear food waste promptly, and wear gloves when moving debris. Keep first aid kits stocked for bites or stings, and contract pest control for nests or infestations. Warn volunteers of likely seasonal risks.
• Use of ladders — Only trained adults should use ladders. Inspect ladders before use, maintain three points of contact, and avoid use in high winds or rain. Always work with a second person present and use extendable or platform ladders for tree and hedge work.
