Typical hazards & measures

• Confined storage areas — Keep sheds and crypt spaces tidy, ventilate before entry, and prohibit lone working in confined or poorly lit areas. Separate chemical storage from tools, and keep floors clear to prevent trips. Lock access when not supervised.
• Vehicle access in graveyards and paths — Restrict entry to authorised vehicles only. Use banksmen when manoeuvring, enforce speed limits, and mark loading/unloading zones. Lock gates outside permitted hours and display clear signage for visitors and contractors.
• Use of ladders — Only trained adults should use ladders. Inspect ladders before use, maintain three points of contact, and avoid use in high winds or rain. Always work with a second person present and use extendable or platform ladders for tree and hedge work.
• Protected trees and wildlife — Identify protected species and consult authorities before work. Train volunteers to avoid nesting seasons, log interventions, and use wildlife-friendly methods of care. Rope off sensitive areas when wildlife is active.
• Sun exposure and dehydration — Encourage hats, sunscreen, and regular hydration breaks for volunteers. Limit heavy work to mornings or evenings in summer. Provide shaded seating and ensure water is always available near outdoor work areas.
