Typical hazards & measures

• Powered mowing and strimming equipment — Carry out pre-use checks, ensure moving parts are guarded, and issue operators with goggles, gloves, and ear defenders. Restrict public access with cones or signage, and stop work if children or visitors enter the area. Store fuel securely after use.
• Unstable memorials and gravestones — Inspect memorials annually, using stability checks where appropriate. Cordon off or signpost unsafe stones, prohibit climbing, and commission professional repair or resetting where instability is detected. Keep inspection logs updated.
• Use of ladders — Only trained adults should use ladders. Inspect ladders before use, maintain three points of contact, and avoid use in high winds or rain. Always work with a second person present and use extendable or platform ladders for tree and hedge work.
• Adverse weather conditions — Check forecasts before outdoor work, postponing in lightning, storms, or heatwaves. Provide shade, water, and rest during hot days, and waterproof clothing in wet conditions. Encourage volunteers to stop if unsafe and seek shelter immediately.
• Night-time or evening access — Install solar lighting or provide torches for volunteers working in evenings. Keep gates locked outside agreed hours and brief users on risks of poor visibility. Encourage daytime maintenance wherever possible.
