Typical hazards & measures
Drowning
— Ensure all participants have strong swimming skills and assess their abilities before entering the water. Use the buddy system for added safety, supervise closely, and position lifeguards or rescue personnel nearby. Flotation devices should be available for weaker swimmers.
Sunburn and dehydration
— Encourage participants to apply sunscreen with a high SPF before entering the water and wear protective clothing like UV rash guards. Provide hydration breaks throughout the session and access to water to prevent dehydration. Adjust session length based on heat and sun exposure.
Rip currents
— Provide training on how to identify and escape rip currents. Mark rip-prone areas and clearly designate safe surfing zones. Conduct drills on escaping rip currents by swimming parallel to shore, and monitor participants closely.
Collisions with other surfers
— Ensure safe spacing between surfers. Use visual markers or flags to define surfing areas. Teach surfing etiquette, including communication and right-of-way rules. Soft-top boards should be used for beginners to minimize the risk of injury.
Falling off board
— Teach participants the correct techniques for safely falling off their boards, emphasizing landing feet first and protecting the head. Practice these skills in controlled settings before advancing.
