Typical hazards & measures

• Electrical overloads and device charging — Staff will ban daisy-chained adapters, require charging only on hard surfaces in communal rooms, remove damaged leads from use, and switch off non-essential items overnight, with spot checks to keep bedding and sockets free of clutter.
• Manual handling of luggage and equipment — The team will plan lifts with trolleys, brief bend-knees/straight-back technique, split heavy loads, keep stairwells clear, and stagger move-ins and move-outs so pupils have time and supervision to carry items safely.
• Water ingress, leaks or minor flooding — Staff will inspect ceilings, windows and bathrooms on arrival, report leaks immediately, cordon wet areas with signs, relocate occupants swiftly if pooling occurs, and dry floors before reopening circulation routes.
• Safeguarding and room allocations — The school will separate staff and student rooms, group by age/sex per policy, require door-open conversations or use common rooms for concerns, and ensure two adults are on night duty, with a clear escalation route to the lead.
• Carbon monoxide from boilers or heaters — The school will request servicing evidence, place portable CO alarms if permitted, keep rooms ventilated, forbid covering vents, and escalate any headache or dizziness reports by moving the pupil to fresh air and alerting venue staff.
