Typical hazards & measures
- Outdoor play in grounds — Define boundaries, check surfaces for hazards, and post leaders at corners. Provide supervision during ball games, set whistle signal for gathering, and restrict access to car parks.
- Use of electrical equipment (music/AV) — PAT-test kit, tape down cables, restrict youth from unsupervised setup, and ensure volumes are kept at safe levels. Keep spares and train one leader to operate equipment.
- Arrival and departure at venue — Provide lighting at entrances, position leaders to welcome and supervise, keep doors clear, and monitor traffic areas during drop-off/pick-up. Record attendance and ensure no one leaves unaccompanied without prior consent.
- Safeguarding conduct — Require all leaders to undergo appropriate background checks, reinforce the organisational code of conduct, and prohibit unsupervised one-to-one meetings unless risk-assessed. Ensure rooms have visibility through open doors or windows, and train leaders to report safeguarding concerns immediately to the designated safeguarding officer.
- Supervision ratios — Maintain minimum of 2 adults present, with 1:10 ratio for teens. Always ensure cover if a leader leaves. Position leaders to maintain line-of-sight and ensure at least one safeguarding-trained adult is on duty.
