Typical hazards & measures

• Plant movement and reversing — Design one-way routes and signed crossings; segregate pedestrians with barriers. Use trained banksmen for reversing, fit beacons/cameras/alarms, enforce low speeds, and keep loads low and stable. Implement radio protocol and pause work if sightlines, lighting, or controls are compromised.
• Personal protective equipment — Select PPE per label: chemical-resistant gloves, coveralls, goggles/face shield and safety boots; check glove breakthrough data; change gloves regularly; provide spares; train on donning/doffing and hygiene; clean PPE after use and store separately from chemicals and food.
• Working near roads and traffic — Apply temporary traffic management to Chapter 8 principles: advance signing, tapers, barriered work zones. Provide safe access/egress and deliveries, brief a banksman, wear high-vis, use conspicuity lighting, coordinate with the highway authority, and schedule off-peak where possible.
• Hidden debris and sharps — Pre-walk and map hazards; remove scrap with tongs or magnet rakes. Wear puncture-resistant gloves/boots and forearm protection; use approved sharps bins with lids; never compact bags by hand. Stop and escalate if suspect cylinders or ordnance are encountered. Keep waste streams segregated.
• Hand-arm vibration — Select low-vibration tools, maintain cutters, and balance handles. Keep grips light, warm hands, and use anti-vibration gloves for comfort. Log points, rotate tasks to remain below action values, and avoid triggers such as cold or nicotine that exacerbate vasoconstriction.
