Typical hazards & measures

• Lifting operations — Appoint a competent lift planner; produce a lift plan with load weights, radii and ground bearing checks. Use certified accessories, pre-use inspect, and keep a clear exclusion zone with a dedicated signaller. Control weather limits and abort criteria; brief all roles before the lift.
• Hand-arm vibration — Select low-vibration tools, maintain cutters, and balance handles. Keep grips light, warm hands, and use anti-vibration gloves for comfort. Log points, rotate tasks to remain below action values, and avoid triggers such as cold or nicotine that exacerbate vasoconstriction.
• Container integrity and labelling — Inspect for swelling, corrosion and worn caps; quarantine suspect stock; never decant into food/drink containers; if relabelling is needed, reproduce full product details and hazard info; date on opening; rotate FIFO; remove obsolete or banned products via licensed disposal.
• Contaminated soils and waste — Review site history and test soils where indicated. Provide suitable RPE and hygiene facilities; prohibit eating in work zones. Segregate contaminated arisings, contain runoff, decontaminate tools/boots, and use consignment notes and licensed carriers for hazardous disposals.
• Waste and empty containers — Triple-rinse empties and add rinsate to tank; pierce/crush to prevent reuse; store waste in bunded bins for licensed collection; retain waste transfer notes; never burn or bury pesticide waste; seal contaminated absorbents and label for hazardous disposal.
