Typical hazards & measures

• Dust and airborne particles — Damp down with bowsers or misters; minimise dry handling and drop heights; use on-tool extraction where practicable. Position crews upwind, suspend dusty tasks in high winds, provide P3 RPE and eye protection, and cover or sheet stockpiles. Sweep wet, not dry, to prevent re-aerosolising.
• Working near roads and traffic — Apply temporary traffic management to Chapter 8 principles: advance signing, tapers, barriered work zones. Provide safe access/egress and deliveries, brief a banksman, wear high-vis, use conspicuity lighting, coordinate with the highway authority, and schedule off-peak where possible.
• Re-entry intervals and signage — Record product REI and time; post signs at all access points; barrier high-use paths; remove signs only after REI expires and surfaces are dry; brief other contractors and site users; keep a log of sign placement/removal with times and responsible person.
• Manual handling of arisings — Plan lift routes and drop points to minimise carries; use sleds, trolleys or grabs for heavy/awkward loads. Team-lift within capability, keep loads close, avoid twisting, rotate tasks, and use micro-breaks. Set maximum single-lift weights and brief warm-up guidance at the start of shift.
• Noise exposure — Select lower-noise plant, fit mufflers and maintain equipment. Establish hearing protection zones with mandatory SNR-rated protection, distance crews from running plant, plan noisy phases, and rotate staff. Monitor exposure with dosimetry where duration is uncertain or prolonged.
